History of the 1070 (Diss) Air Training Corps (ATC)
The history of the 1070 (Diss) Air Cadets is an on-going cadet project and we hope to populate this area with information as we collate it.

We believe the Squadron was formed in 1941 and that the first Commanding Officer was GH Fairs, the local school headmaster.

The complete list of 1070 (Diss) Air Training Corps (ATC) Commanding Officers - to the best of our knowledge - is:

1941 to 1946Flt Lt GH Fairs
1953 to 1963Flt Lt RG Patterson
1963 to 1971Flt Lt D Swanton
1971 to 1980Flt Lt P Jefford
1980 to 1995Flt Lt CJW Norton
1995 to 31/8/96Flt Lt S Christian
01/09/1996 to 24/04/2000   Flt Lt P Burton
25/04/2000 to 31/01/2002Flt Lt S Hastings
01/02/2002 to 14/05/2009Flt Lt AJ Pursehouse
14/05/2009 to dateFlt Lt E Dixon

If any old 1070 cadets know about and can explain the gap from 1946 to 1953, we'd be keen to hear! Was the Squadron disbanded after the war and then re-formed in 1953 for instance, or are we missing information?

We would be particularly interested to hear from anyone with information about the Squadron's history, no matter how small a piece of information it might be. The cadets will then use this and other research they are conducting to assemble a complete story.

Old photographs and stories that local people would help bring the Squadron's history to life.

If you believe you have any information or photographs that we might copy, please contact us, we'd love to hear from you

RAF Chivenor in 1962 - Ian Dade
Ian Dade was a cadet with the Diss (1070) Air Training Corps (Air Cadets) between April 1962 & autumn 1963 and has vivid memories of a 'camp' to RAF Chivenor near Barnstaple in 1962.

Ian particularly recalls his "flight experience" in a Chipmunk, never being quite sure which way was up and whether the blue out of the canopy was sky or sea! Also of a hike across Exmoor.

Ian would like to identify and maybe contact some of the people from the Chivenor camp photograph, so maybe you will recognise some faces...or maybe one might even be you!

A cadet of 7 years service - David Clarke
David Clarke joined the 1070 Diss & Eye Air Training Cadet Squadron in 1963 and remained with the Air Cadets for 7 years until 1970.

David has memories of his Duke of Edinburgh expedition in the summer of 1965 in Northumberland and of a summer camp at RAF Binbrook in August 1967.
